In my second tour of ‘nam I was given a purple heart and shipped back home after taking a bullet in the left nut. Upon arrival back in the ‘hood I found my wife and daughters brutally slain. I swore bloody vengeance, but as the hours passed by, I forgot about revenge and my slain family, finding solace in drugs, alcohol and the way of the shaolin…you may think that these three have little in common but ask yourself this…What the fuck do you know?

During my wandering I came across a group of ex–United States Army Special Forces personnel who worked as soldiers of fortune, while on the run from the Army after being branded as war criminals for a crime they didn’t commit. I joined them to fight injustice, but nobody who was being injusticed could ever find us. Downbeat, I decided to make my way to Madrid (by way of Istanbul, Lisbon and Palermo) and set about becoming the greatest flamenco dancer that the north nottinghamshire coal fields  had ever born. That didn’t take too long so I decided to teach every Spaniard (who had 700€ to spare) perfect English. Thus I could juggle my dancing with alcoholism and the way of the shaolin (I’d got off horse by this time) as well as working, a job that had the added bonus of never letting me forget all of the poverty and hopelessness that I had witnessed. Luckily I was able to avoid the grinding poverty that an English teacher in Madrid has to live with, as I had previously written a song that became famous when Cindy Lauper recorded it. I found peace in “make” and “do” and gradually weaned myself off the way of the shaolin and even the drinking.

But something was still missing…

My very good friend Ryan Gozling suggested I stayed in Lisbon in August 2012 (after having lived there between 1999 and 2004) and decided to write a blog for my own amusement (http://daveinmadridandlisbon.wordpress.com)..taking photos of what I ate and making a note of how much it cost, as well as pictures of anything of interest along the way.

I’m home in Madrid now so I thought I might as well do something similar here, although I will be posting less rigorously . Maybe it’ll be useful to folk visiting Madrid …who like to eat and aren’t keen on spending too much cash.
